Yasmin | Yaz Attorney
Yasmin is a low dose contraceptive pill that uses a combination of drugs: Ethinyl Estradiol and Drosperinone. It is primarily used for preventing pregnancy but has since become the subject of numerous lawsuits because of the danger it may pose to users. Though YAZ differs slightly from Yasmin, both have been the subject of controversy. YAZ gives 3 more days of low dose birth control hormones than Yasmin and was introduced in the US in 2006. Yasmin was introduced in the US market in 2001. The marketing campaign for the product was robust but the medical problems began shortly after YAZ gained popularity.
How Yasmin Works and How It's Different
Yasmin/Yaz are categorically different from other low dose birth control pills. Yasmin was the first contraceptive pill that contained a progestin hormone called drospirenone. Drosperinone is a synthetic version of the progesterone that women produce naturally. Other commonly used contraceptive pills are based on testosterone and tend to lead to weight gain and bloating. This effect is remarkably lower with the use of Yaz/Yasmin.
The Risks of the Drug
Use of these contraceptives may affect the level of potassium in blood by increasing the risk of hyperkalemia (elevated blood potassium level) and arrhythmias. Users of these contraceptives also face high risk of thromboembolism (blood clots migrating through the venous or arterial system and causing occlusion).
