Paxil (generic name Paroxetine) was introduced in 1992 by GlaxoSmithKline (formerly SmithKline Beecham) for treating major depressions like general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder panic disorder and obsessive disorder. The drug is an SSRI (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) antidepressant that increases the levels of mood affecting chemical serotonin in brain.
How Paxil Works
Paxil is essentially a SSRI class drug that works specifically on serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical present between the nerve cells of brain that works as a messenger between two nerve cells. After receipt of message by the recipient nerve cell, remaining serotonin is reabsorbed by the sender. This process is called “re-uptake”. Due to several reasons levels of serotonin can get unbalanced. Paxil blocks re-uptake of serotonin to combat such imbalance and helps in maintaining the level of serotonin.
Side Effects of Paxil
Drying of mouth, irritable bowel syndrome, drowsiness, excessive sweating, quivering involuntarily, loss of appetite, urination problems and sexual problems are common side effects that are associated with the use of Paxil. Some rare side effects reported are nervousness, impotence, anxiety and indigestion. Use of this drug has also been linked with increase in suicidal thoughts and hostile behavior. In extreme cases there may be signs of serotonin syndrome manifested by signs like increase in blood pressure and heart rate, seizures, edema, difficulty in breathing and notable behavioral changes.
Since its introduction in 1992, there are more than 5000 lawsuits filed against the manufacturer of this drug. Families whose children were born with birth defects because their mother used Paxil during pregnancy received $1.2 million each from the company (July 21, 2010, Bloomberg). There were nearly 800 cases of birth defects that were covered and 100 remains pending.
If you feel that you or your dear ones have been affected adversely by use of Paxil then you may explore the possibility to file a lawsuit and claim compensation for the said damages. Lawyers experienced in cases related to product liability or dangerous drugs may be helpful in this regard.
